University of Minnesota, Barbara Barker Center for Dance

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The University of Minnesota's nationally-acclaimed dance program provides classes for 1000 students annually and has 70 enrolled majors. Considered one of the top 10 dance schools in the country, it attracts leading dancers and choreographers to teach and perform. The spirit of artistic expression, which lies at the heart of the University of Minnesota Dance Program, is reflected in the design for the $3.3 million Barbara Barker Center for Dance. A facility for both instruction and public dance performances, the building will play an important role in the development of the dance program and the University's new arts district on the West Bank Campus. The design for the three-story, 18,200 SF structure includes a 120-seat performance studio, two rehearsal studios, lobby, classroom, and faculty offices. The design juxtaposes two abstract forms, inspired by the kinetic nature of dance and defined by a complex relationship of lines and curves. Interior and exterior spaces converge around a light-filled lobby, creating an important link between neighborhood and campus.
