Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Gamma Knife Suite

Los Angeles, California

The Gamma Knife is a state-of-the-art device that targets radiation rays to treat cancer. Because of the potentially harmful effects of radiation, HGA's design solution follows strict safety guidelines. The Gamma Knife itself is housed in a concrete vault surrounded by two-foot thick concrete walls. Specially designed chamber floors within the existing building support nearly 40 tons of weight, much of which is comprised of the 20-ton Gamma Knife and lead-shielding doors that protect both patient and staff during and after treatment.
Softening the space's high-tech function, HGA designed a private, healing environment for patients and family. Wood-paneled walls, warm colors, artwork, natural lighting, sustainable materials and a refreshment area offer comfort and relief. Exterior walls disguise the vault behind while allowing access to replace the Gamma Knife unit every five years.
