Da Vinci Science Center
Allentown, PennsylvaniaThe Da Vinci Discovery Center of Science and Technology is a hands-on science center serving K-8 students in the Lehigh Valley in eastern Pennsylvania. Located on the corner of Cedar Crest College campus, the Center draws on the example of Leonardo daVinci as the creative, imaginative thinker and scientist.
The signature design element is the central lobby and exhibit space with soaring window walls capped by a butterfly roof. The tall, light-filled space captures views of the rolling valley during the day and serves as the main circulation hub. At night, this glowing space commands attention from the major crossroads and delivers a glimpse of the science inside to passersby.
The 30,000 s.f. center features hands-on exhibit halls, lecture space, science labs, cafeteria and store. Exposed structure and mechanical systems, oxidizing Cor-Ten steel, daylighting and sustainable design strategies allow the building itself to be an educational tool and exhibit.
The Discovery Center was designed to meet a LEED Silver certification rating and incorporates innovative strategies such as roof-mounted photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine. These renewable energy systems generate over 22 percent of the building's energy use, making it a regional model for sustainable design.
