El Camino Community College, Science Complex

Torrance, California

The science building renovation project included a complete replacement of mechanical and electrical systems as well as laboratory casework, fume hoods and equipment in order to create renewed state-of-the-art labs and classrooms.
The departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics and Physical Sciences were housed in three buildings that ranged in age from 40-60 years. Temporary trailers were used as swing space to enable a phased construction. The 56,000 SF of renovated buildings now includes flexible teaching labs with fixed equipment at the perimeter and moveable center tables to allow reconfiguration for different uses. Computer stations and video/data projection capabilities were also incorporated into the laboratories.
