Froedtert Hospital Cancer Treatment Center

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Froedtert Hospital's new East Clinic Addition is one of the state's leading centers for cancer research and treatment. The Cancer Treatment Center was built on the third floor of the addition to align with the existing hematology Oncology Department. This presented a significant design challenge because of the massive weight of the equipment and radiation shielding. Most cancer treatment facilities are housed at or below grade to accommodate the added weight. HGA solved this dilemma by placing the 3,330-ton cast-in-place concrete vaults in separate structures adjacent to the cancer center, which gives the appearance of a single building. Completed in the late 1990s, the Addition offers linear accelerators and high dose radiation/brachytherapy treatment without sacrificing critical adjacency to existing oncology services.
