General Mills Visitor's Lobby Renovation

Golden Valley, Minnesota

Lighting reinforces the clean lines of this renovated lobby to a 1959 modernist building, demonstrating that a thoughtful application of simple, energy-efficient lighting instruments can achieve a beautiful effect. Energy-efficient ceramic metal-halide downlights provide the warm general illumination, while additional downlight highlights the white marble wall behind the reception desk. Small aperture wallwashers emphasize an art wall with three-dimensional General Mills' brand names. The same fluorescent wallwashers illuminate the other art pieces in the lobby, as well. Accent luminaires provide front highlight to free-standing, blue-glass panels. Ambient lights in the room behind the glass panels cast the back glow. This lighting delineates the glass transparency and creates interesting shadow effects.
