John Muir Medical Center Electrophysiology Laboratory

Walnut Creek, California

For this Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory, HGA retrofitted an existing 800-square-foot catheterization laboratory to accommodate the latest in EP equipment, dividing the space between a procedure room, control room, and equipment room. Functionally, the design team shaped the space in response to medical needs, placing the procedure room in clear view of the control room. This placement allows medical staff to maintain visual communication with each other, ceiling monitors, and the patient. Aesthetically, HGA subdued the room's high-tech impact through color, lighting and structure. The control room's curving partition and canopy, for instance, visually maximizes the limited space. Additionally, extensive use of blue creates a soothing environment, reducing patient anxiety. Light blue walls contrast against deeper blue cabinets and curving work stations. Blue inlays highlight the vinyl floor, while blue acoustical ceiling panels and blue upholstery on task chairs further complement the color scheme.
