Lynde and Harry Bradley School of Technology and Trade

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School has become the flagship program for technology and trade education in Milwaukee Public Schools by maintaining leading-edge technology in a state-of-the-art flexible facility, enabling students to meet performance standards in trade/technical, academic and employability skills. This has resulted in increasingly larger numbers of students entering and successfully completing post-secondary education and training options which lead to careers in trade and technical business and industry. The new building contains approximately 280,000 SF of space with a much higher ratio of usable area than the former building. It ranges in height from 2 stories for common space such as the gym, cafeteria, and library, to 4 stories for the classroom/lab space. The new building was built on the site of the former athletic fields along National Avenue. Upon completion, the old building was razed and new athletic fields were built on that site. The structure is a flexible design to facilitate current and future technologies and consists of a concrete frame and steel roof structure; glass and aluminum window wall; ground-faced concrete block and metal panel exterior. Major elements include a striking atrium entryway and commons area, large open laboratory spaces and an outdoor construction yard. The engineering and design of the facility makes extensive use of sustainable principles including natural daylighting, recycled building materials, and an energy-efficient steam heating and cooling system.
