Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport Ground Transportation Center Passenger Flow Study

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Existing Situation The $2.7 billion airport expansion has significantly changed passenger flows within and around the terminal, specifically through the development of the Ground Transportation Center and the addition of automated people movers (HUB Tram).
Challenge Determine the need for additional escalator capacity from the Ground Transportation Center to the main ticketing level, considering additional traffic volumes and the online operation of the HUB Tram.
Solution HGA's industrial engineers constructed a comprehensive discrete event simulation model of passenger flows. The results of the study determined the actual hourly capacity of the escalators, measured queue size and wait times under additional passenger volumes, and the load impact of the HUB Tram.
