Mayo Health System Expansion

Albert Lea, Minnesota

Prior to the Albert Lea Medical Center expansion in 1999, cancer patients diagnosed in Albert Lea had to travel 130 miles round-trip to receive treatment. HGA planned and designed a two-story expansion that linked the existing hospital and outpatient clinic, centralizing services and providing room for Medical and Radiation Oncology. This expansion allowed for substantial future growth. As predicted, patient volumes have increased dramatically. Albert Lea has called on HGA again to expand and renovate the outpatient clinic to meet these increased demands. We are designing a two-floor vertical expansion for added exam rooms and office space, enabling Albert Lea to upgrade technology, better honor today's patient privacy requirements and improve physician-nurse adjacencies. The canopied drop-off/waiting and renovated entrance-serving both hospital and clinic-will improve visitor flow and provide room for new services and amenities. The first floor addition creates room for community/patient education programs, a retail pharmacy, durable medical equipment, complete Ophthalmology services and optical retail space.
