Mayo Health System Cancer Center
Albert Lea, MinnesotaPrior to the Mayo Health Systems-Albert Lea expansion, cancer patients diagnosed at Albert Lea Medical Center had to travel 130 miles round-trip to receive treatment. Moreover, the Medical Center and Naeve Hospital were separated, which was inconvenient for staff and patients alike. Mayo Albert Lea engaged HGA to design a two-story expansion that linked the existing hospital and outpatient clinic, providing room for Medical and Radiation Oncology. In addition to housing the much-needed Cancer Center, the expansion provides space for several new and updated/expanded facilities.
New Departments: Bahavioral Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Urgent Care
Expanded: Radiology
Updated: Ambulatory Surgery, Laboratory, and Pharmacy
The Mayo Albert Lea Cancer Center combines multiple treatment options in a single patient center. HGA's design team created a soothing, comfortable space that would not be intimidating. Designers also took special care to choose art that would both sooth and distract patients throughout their visits.

"The end result is most pleasing. I wish to thank you for advancing the original ceiling mural concept to the use of an original artistic form. We ended up with a patient amenity that is truly unique to the new Cancer Center."
