Medtronic World Headquarters and Research Facility

Fridley, Minnesota

Medtronic needed a new worldwide headquarters to serve as a research, administrative and education center that would be flexible and attractive for employees and clients.
The first phase included 450,000 SF for 1,100 employees, with office structures for the Corporate, Research and Neurological Services Groups. This program is supported by a campus commons facility that includes food service, a fitness center, library, auditorium and structured parking for 1,000 vehicles.
In addressing the unique issues of the various internal market groups, HGA worked closely with Medtronic to develop a migration strategy to the new campus and an effective stacking and blocking solution. This solution meet the organizational needs of the individual market groups while providing relationships to common public areas.
The workplace environment is organized around a neighborhood model developed for individual departments. Neighborhoods form larger communities, which relate to each other through primary commons areas.
The open space office planning was expressed with an elegant arrival sequence off of Highway 65 through a newly created wetland and bridged causeway to a formal front plaza for customer and visitor reception. This arrival space is echoed with the progression of three outdoor gardens that in tandem create a corporate lawn that stretches 1,200 feet to the west where a secondary, later phase entry point is located.
