Iowa City, IowaMercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, faced the threat of losing its market share when a local physicians group began exploring the idea of building its own orthopedic center. HGA, in collaboration with the healthcare consulting firm of Leider, Hallstrom %26 Mannix, developed a facilities solution that went beyond fending off the immediate threat. The new 27-bed Orthopedic Care Center-now ranked #1 in Iowa and in the top 5 percent nationally-dissuaded the physicians from defecting to another facility, keeping these profitable services in the Mercy family. In addition to the two new Orthopedic operating rooms, HGA helped Mercy expand and update their other surgical services. There are 12 new, state-of-the-art surgical suites in all, as well as new waiting, consultation, Pre-Op and Post-Op areas. Before the expansion, surgery patients en route from Pre-op to Surgery had to pass through public areas. HGA devised separate circulation for staff and patients, shielding them from public view.
