Michigan Technological University, Wadsworth Hall Renovation

Houghton, Michigan

Wadsworth Hall at Michigan Technological University (MTU) is a fifty-year-old dormitory housing over 50%25 of MTU's on-campus population. Although built with integrity, Wadsworth Hall was no longer meeting the needs of today's students. Bedrooms shared by two students were woefully lacking in electrical systems, bathrooms were group-style with decaying plumbing systems, little mechanical ventilation existed, lounges were only on the first floor near the building entries, laundry facilities were located in the basement, and food service was cafeteria style. MTU determined that renovating Wadsworth Hall with contemporary residence hall standards was the best course of action. A two year phased remodeling incorporated upgrading the electrical and communication systems within the rooms, redesigned bathrooms that provided more privacy, the addition of lounges and kitchens to each "house," laundry facilities provided on each residential floor, new "loftable" furnishings in the rooms, upgraded elevators, new sprinkler systems and a new finish program throughout. In addition, the building's dining services were redesigned to incorporate a "scatter" style or Marche food preparation and delivery concept. The Cafe, weight and fitness areas, game rooms, classrooms, offices and guest suites were completely renovated as well as the Public Safety offices. The final population of the building is 1,050 students.
