North Country Health Services Expansion

Bemidji, Minnesota

Built early in the 20th century, North Country Health Services (NCHS) has evolved from a small-town hospital into the region's preeminent healthcare provider. During the late 1990s, NCHS began extensive renovations, consolidation and relocation of existing departments and new construction, including a $28.5 million hospital expansion. NCHS desired an uplifting image that would blend new and existing facilities and create a commercial presence. HGA incorporated the distinctive character of the client, site, program and community into each project. The West Expansion provides space for a growing physical, occupational and speech therapy rehabilitation program, Peak Performance. The East Expansion added a four-story bed tower and more than 92,000 square feet to the hospital. The project increased the number of beds by more than 15 percent and converted most semi-private rooms to private rooms. HGA also renovated the existing four-story hospital, increasing efficiency and anticipating future expansion needs.
