Northfield Community Hospital

Northfield, Minnesota

Despite expanding a few years before, the community hospital in rapidly growing Northfield, Minnesota, again needed more space. Administrators decided that the city-owned facility had finally outgrown the site it had occupied since 1939. After five years of planning, construction began in 2001 on a $35 million, 125,000-square-foot facility on a new site leased from neighboring St. Olaf College. HGA designed the new facility accommodate 37 inpatient beds and 40 long-term care beds. The patient-centered design fosters flexibility and efficiency. Swing beds bordering Obstetrics are available for other patients as needed. Surgery suites are located between the Outpatient Clinic and Obstetrics for easy access. HGA's design maximizes privacy with separate public and patient/staff corridors, all-private patient rooms and enclosed work areas. HGA worked with the client to develop a campus master plan that enables horizontal expansion, as well as the future development of separate medical office and clinic buildings.
