The Ohio State University, Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital

Columbus, Ohio

Opened in 2004, the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital stands as a gateway to the medical campus and reaffirms The Ohio State University (OSU) as a leading provider of innovative cardiovascular care. HGA designed the 205,000-square-foot Heart Hospital to consolidate services and link existing hospital and clinic buildings. Standing as a beacon welcoming patients and visitors, the four-story, glass atrium is a stirring "spatial heart" for the surrounding cardiac care services. Contiguous with comprehensive research facilities at The OSU Medical Center, this hospital allows staff to move new discoveries from research areas to the patient's bedside, granting access to the most advanced treatment methods available. The hospital provides a full spectrum of services from outpatient testing and procedures to heart-lung transplants. HGA's design combines the latest technology, such as groundbreaking robotic surgery, with a healing, patient-centered environment. Designers minimized patient movement by locating six second-floor cardiac catheterization labs and electrophysiology labs adjacent to a 30-room patient care unit. Likewise, six fourth-floor operating rooms are linked to another 30-room patient care unit.
