Saint Norbert College, Old Saint Joseph Church

DePere, Wisconsin

The oldest building on the campus of St. Norbert College, St. Joseph Church is a neo-Gothic style building constructed in the 1890s. Primary components of this project include complete renovation of the Worship Space, the addition of a new Gathering Space and related support areas, and the addition of an Oratory Chapel. The Renovation of the Worship Space removed many of the original plaster finishes and suspended plaster ceilings to reveal the inherent beauty of the original masonry construction and hand-hewn wood roof trusses. The resulting proportion, simplicity, and honesty of the space support a variety of worship experiences. Built with transparent materials, the new Gathering Space unites all of the parish's functions and serves as a beacon of welcome. The architectural detailing is sympathetic to the existing church while also conveying a modern and forward-looking image. The Oratory Chapel is designed to be sacred and intimate with exquisite details of material and form that become visible as one draws near.
