St. Paul, MinnesotaThe regional center for Sterotactic Radio Surgery creates a spa-like environment out of a dark basement space, in which color and light help ease patients and families' anxiety. Brightening the basement location, warm colored lights enhance the multi-chromatic finishes. Accent lighting and decorative pendants add elegance to the comfortable environment. In the treatment room, limited ceiling space and the machine's articulation required that the shallow cove be lit with fiber optics. Adjustable accent lights placed outside the Cyberknife's swing range provide light for small procedures, such as inserting IVs. The lighting design creates a relaxed environment for patients, aids in the healing process, and meets patients' requests for "hospitals that don't look like hospitals."
