Saint Mary's Cathedral

Saint Cloud, Minnesota

HGA developed a master plan for re-orientation of the liturgical functions based upon the guidelines set forth in "Environment and Art in Catholic Worship," a statement issued by 1978 by the National Conference of Catholic bishops. Sightlines needed to be substantially improved. It was determined that the choir would remain in its original location in the apse; and that the new organ would be placed in proximity to the choir - therefore also in the apse. The existing overscaled aluminum baldachin was removed. Its altar was replaced with a free-standing altar positioned closer to the people. The liturgical functions in the new sanctuary are located forward into the nave. The raised sanctuary platforms improves the sightlines. The new freestanding altar, bishop throne and lectern form a neutral ground on which Mass celebration becomes the accent and focus. Another element in the re-organization is a new Blessed Sacrament prayer area and new tabernacle are located outside the nave at the end of the right side aisle. A new baptismal area was established at a central location in the left side aisle. A new large font which is the focus of this area is scaled for baptismal immersion. Two of the four existing confessionals were remodeled into Reconciliation Chapels offering the penitent a choice between face to face encounter of anonymity provided by a screen. The other two confessionals remain in their traditional configuration for those who desire private confession.
