Target Northern Campus Water Garden
Brooklyn Park, MinnesotaEnvisioned to include 1.3 million square feet of office space, this three-phase corporate campus houses Target's growing customer service, data analysis, inventory control and printing services. The client's primary goal was to improve the quality of the work environment by giving employees a beautiful campus they can enjoy in a variety of ways. The landscape architect worked to integrate building placement with extensive plantings, a large reflecting pool, elegant plazas, walking paths, gardens and modern sculpture. All site development, including the ponds, planting, paving, lighting and sculpture was designed by the landscape architect, and every detail addresses the need of employees to celebrate the joy of being outside during the workday.
Significant Features:
The heart of the campus as a sculpted modern "oasis" surrounded by 40 acres of wetlands, native grasses and wildflowers
A clear hierarchy of outdoor spaces with a large, centralized curvilinear space (and reflecting pond) serving as the primary organizing element for the entire campus
A ceremonial entry road that traverses the central space, providing interesting views and orientation to all of the buildings
A circular reflecting pond punctuated with a grid of fourteen limestone megaliths ranging in height from 12 to 14 feet
A pond that is interesting year-round, including submarine topography (reminiscent of Japanese dry-sand gardens) that is exposed only when the pond is drained
A dining terrace with bosque of Honeylocust trees to accommodate a variety of activities from early morning Tai chi to large corporate gatherings
A South Garden including a grove of crabapple trees, granite benches, modern sculpture and a sculpted berm of native grasses
Strong indoor-outdoor relationships, especially between the Cafeteria and the Dining Terrace/Pond
Sophisticated site water management
