University of California-Davis Medical Center, The M.I.N.D. Institute

Sacramento, California

Discouraged by a dearth of information about the causes and treatment of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), a determined group of parents embarked on grassroots fundraising efforts, which inspired the University of California Davis to establish the Institute for the Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders - The M.I.N.D. Institute. HGA began work on the Campus Master Plan in July 2000. The firm initially created a program narrative for the facility, which was an effective fundraising tool. HGA designed The M.I.N.D. Institute to foster collaboration in diagnosis, treatment, education and research in order to find a cure for ASDs. We carefully designed every aspect of the four M.I.N.D. Institute buildings to further these goals while taking care to create a soothing environment for the children treated there. Because ASD patients can be easily distracted and over stimulated, HGA designed the home-like interior to suit their unique needs and sensitivities. Our interior designers chose warm, soothing tones for wall coverings, flooring and other materials. Lighting is subdued, with many fixtures hidden from view, and running water and technology are kept out of sight.
