University of California-Davis Medical Center, The M.I.N.D. Institute
Sacramento, CaliforniaThe Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (M.I.N.D.) Institute at the University of California Davis is the first research and clinical facility in the United States dedicated to autism.
HGA conducted extensive research into Autism Spectrum Disorders, which causes sensory sensitivity to sound, lighting, colors and patterns. The research provided understanding of how lighting affects ASD individuals, such as how indirect lighting helps reduce undesired sensory stimulation.
With the research, HGA designed indirect lighting sources that produce subdued lighting throughout the patient areas. Architectural coves, pendants and wall sconces integrated into the architecture reduce glare against low-contrast surfaces.
The M.I.N.D. Institute lighting system demonstrates our research-based design expertise to provide solutions for unique user groups.
