University of California-Davis, Music Building and Recital Hall
Davis, CaliforniaA Detailed Project Program was developed by the design team in collaboration of the Planning Committee. Through a series of interviews and discussions, the team was able to focus in on the goals and priorities for the project. In addition, the design team researched and toured other comparable facilities nationally to provide a benchmark. The priority of the new Music Building will be a 400-seat Recital Hall. The acoustic design of the new Recital Hall must produce a hall of superb acoustical quality, particularly for small to medium size chamber ensembles, and piano recitals. In addition, the Hall must provide excellent conditions for choral rehearsals and performance, and for its baroque organ. The necessary variability of acoustic conditions will be achieved through the use of moveable curtains and by partial decoupling of the large volume above the suspended ceiling elements and around the performance platform. The Recital Hall will include a performance platform and organ alcove; support space for box office, control room, audio visual equipment, rehearsal/changing rooms and storage; teaching studios; and academic and administrative offices for the Department of Music. The design of the new Music Building emphasizes the importance of great visibility for the main entrance lobby. Estimated completion is spring 2011.
