University of California-Davis Medical Center, Davis Wing Addition
Sacramento, CaliforniaDesigned by HGA to further the UC Davis goal of becoming a world-class medical center, the Davis Wing Addition (Tower II) also unites the campus and provides a superior educational environment. Though new seismic stability standards were the impetus for UC Davis, a top-20 medical school, to replace its outdated inpatient facilities, administrators seized the opportunity to add space, improve patient comfort and staff efficiency, and enhance its teaching capabilities. They wanted Tower II to blend with existing structures while providing state-of-the-art medical technology to its patients.
The owner's Campus Urban Design Plan guided HGA's selection of materials, as well as our massing and articulation strategies. Our design enables an all-digital X-ray service and bedside computers. The contemporary addition complements the existing hospital and employs creative design solutions to connect the two seamlessly. To foster educational pursuits without clashing with patient care, the design team included teaching alcoves throughout inpatient units, teaching pods within caregiver stations, and centralized teaching/conference spaces.
