University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Kenilworth Building

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Kenilworth Building, for the State of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), creates a dynamic mixture of retail space, student housing for UWM, and art education lab and studios for UWM's Peck School of the Arts. Located in Milwaukee's east side just blocks from Lake Michigan, the project renovated nearly 500,000 SF of dilapidated warehouse space. The design solution transformed The Kenilworth Building by breaking the two historic masses apart and then reconnecting them with a new pedestrian street that features seating areas, planting beds and vine covered walls. The ground floor consists of retail blocks with enclosed parking, UWM's housing lobby and art gallery. The 1914 East Building is dedicated to The Peck School of the Arts including faculty and student studios, research lab and performance spaces for ceramics, painting, music, theater, film and dance. The 1943 West Building includes enclosed parking and a variety of student housing options.
