HGA Wins Community Impact Award for Math and Science Complex at East Los Angeles College
Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Business Council (LABC) has honored HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) with the Community Impact Award for the Math and Science Complex at East Los Angeles College, which is part of the Los Angeles Community College District's (LACCD) Builds Green Program. Kelly G. Candaele, President, Board of Trustees, Marshall E. Drummond, Chancellor and Larry H. Eisenberg, Executive Director, Facilities and Planning, accepted the award on behalf of the LACCD Builds Green Program during the 39th annual Architectural Awards on May 28. The annual awards ceremony honors the project teams responsible for the city's very best architecture over the past two years, according to LABC President Mary Leslie.
"Our award winners serve as models for architects and developers around the globe, underscoring Los Angeles' stature as a world-renowned center for architectural design," said Leslie.
Part of an overall master plan by HGA, the 118,000-square-foot Math and Science complex includes a new building for Life Sciences, Chemistry and Math, as well as two renovated buildings for Physics and Earth Sciences surrounding a landscaped plaza. As the centerpiece, the three-story Math and Sciences building consists of two academic wings connected by a glass-walled circulation core. An articulated facade features brick on the ground level with zinc panels and plaster on the upper floors. Special features include a "success center," where math students will gain one-on-one tutoring in a computer lab/study area, and a "mock-patient" room for Life Science students. Sustainable design innovations include day lighting, renewable-energy sources and recycled materials to meet LEED Silver certification. The central plaza between the buildings maximizes green space, provides a gathering space for math/science students and connects them to the main academic campus.
"East Los Angeles College is committed to improving the surrounding neighborhood near Monterey Park and creating an academically vibrant campus that reaches out to the entire community," said James Matson, AIA, associate vice president in HGA's Los Angeles office. "Sustainable design is about finding the right balance between the impact of continued development and the creation of safe buildings with long-term value. This award acknowledges HGA's dedication to responsible environmental design practices that benefit our clients and the community at large."
Construction on the Math and Life Sciences building is scheduled to start in 2010, with an anticipated completion date of 2012. The renovated Physics and Earth Sciences buildings will follow in a second phase.
