HGA Architects and Engineers Win GE Edison Award for Sustainable Design
HGAMilwaukee, WI - General Electric recently honored HGA Architects and Engineers' Milwaukee office with their 2005 Award for Sustainable Design. The award, a facet of the GE Edison Award program, was given to HGA for the design of the lighting system which was created for the firm's new office spaces along the Milwaukee River.
HGA moved into their new offices in August 2005; and were the only firm honored for sustainable design in this national competition. The winning team, Jill Cody, IALD, LC, LEED AP and Jay Oleson, PE, LEED AP, designed a lighting solution that reinforced the architectural rigor of the space while contributing to the project's LEED Silver accreditation. Cody and Oleson selected the most efficacious sources and a control system that integrated photocontrols, occupancy sensors, and shade control; energy consumption is minimized while maintaining visual comfort and lighting quality.
"It was a great opportunity to design a lighting system in line with LEED Silver Certification while highlighting the architecture as well as meeting the needs of the people in the space," said Jill Cody. "We used only the most efficient light sources and luminaires, located light where it was needed, and maximized the use of daylight."
A limited palette of luminaires and light sources provides illumination for tasks, highlights displays, and complements the architecture. Tailored forms, architectural integration, and daylighting were recognized as hallmarks of the design.
Sponsored by General Electric, the Award for Sustainable Design is a facet of the GE Edison Award program that gives special recognition to those lighting designs that minimize the use of energy, maximize the use of daylighting, avoid skyward illumination, and ensure system durability and maintainability while providing high-quality lighting.
HGA is noted for its commitment to sustainable design with numerous awards for "green" design with more than 50 LEED-accredited design professionals on staff, one of the highest of any architectural and engineering firm in the nation.
