HGA Wins Award of Excellence for Leadership in Sustainable Design

Milwaukee, WI - HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) has won an Award of Excellence in the annual Wisconsin Sustainability %26 Energy Efficiency (SE2) Leadership Awards. HGA was cited for innovative environmental design solutions in the adaptive reuse of its Milwaukee offices in the renovated Marine Terminal Building along the Milwaukee River in the city's historic 3rd Ward. The award was presented to HGA at the annual Greening the Heartland/SE2 Conference in Madison, Wisconsin on September 13, 2007. "This award is a great honor that recognizes HGA's commitment to promoting sustainable design and environmentally sound building practices," says James Vander Heiden, vice president and principal with HGA. "Our office space is an incubator for sustainable design ideas that inspires our team daily when working on new energy-conscious projects." HGA's office is the first Wisconsin building to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Silver Certification. The 30,000-square-foot office space, with open work stations for approximately 125 employees, takes advantage of direct sunlight from tall windows on three sides, automated shading systems, a highly efficient lighting network, regionally manufactured recycled materials, and low-flow water systems, among other features. The office interior is part of a major multi-use renovation to the Marine Terminal Building, a 1921 industrial structure used to connect maritime shipping with ground transportation. HGA's office occupies portions of the ground floor, with 83 housing units on upper floors. The Wisconsin Sustainability %26 Energy Efficiency Leadership Awards program recognizes leadership in energy efficient and sustainable design, construction and operation of Wisconsin commercial and non-residential buildings. The awards program is co-sponsored by AIA Wisconsin, Energy Center of Wisconsin, ASHRAE-Wisconsin, Illuminating Engineering Society-Milwaukee, Wisconsin Green Building Alliance, IFMA-Wisconsin, and Focus on Energy. The conference was organized by the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance in conjunction with the U.S. Green Building Council Heartland region. HGA has more than 80 LEED Accredited Professionals and is ranked among the top firms nationally. They have completed many sustainably designed projects or projects with sustainable design elements, including:

  • Zoological Society of Milwaukee County-Karen Peck Katz Conservation Education Center
