Good Health Begins With Good Environments - Hammel Green and Abrahamson Wins Two MODERN HEALTHCARE Design Awards for M.I.N.D. Institute and CentraCare Health Plaza

Minneapolis, MN - The architectural design firm of Hammel Green and Abrahamson (HGA) was recognized by the 2004 Modern Healthcare Design Awards with an Award of Excellence for its design of the M.I.N.D. Institute and a Citation award for its CentraCare Health Plaza design. Sponsored by Modern Healthcare and the American Institute of Architects' Academy of Architecture for Health, the two projects were lauded for combining design excellence with functionality and flexibility. "Both awards recognize what we are most proud of at HGA - our ability to deliver innovative healthcare design solutions that reflect the communities our clients serve; meet the high-tech, administrative and medical needs of the staff and are welcoming to patients and families," said Hammel Green and Abrahamson's Gary Nyberg, RA. HGA was awarded an Award of Excellence for its design of the M.I.N.D. Institute. The $28 million M.I.N.D. (Medical Investigations of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute, part of the University of California - Davis Medical Center campus, researches neurological disorders through collaborative multidisciplinary teams. The Institute, which uses warm and simple designs that don't over stimulate the senses, includes a resource center, an outpatient clinic, academic offices, and laboratories. HGA's covered walkways, wooded courtyards and gardens throughout offer a relaxing and interactive ambience. Judges noted that "the exterior and interior design create a very therapeutic environment," and that it is "a work of perfection that inspires the human spirit and mind." HGA received a 2004 Citation Award for the CentraCare Health Plaza, a new 125-acre campus located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. HGA designed the ambulatory care center, which includes a cancer treatment center, women's and children's clinic, imaging center, diabetes and endocrinology center, and kidney dialysis center to anticipate future growth with flexibility for expansion. The $52.6 million facility provides 330,000 square feet of outpatient services and can be expanded to provide a continuum of healthcare services totaling one million square feet. The design concept utilizes existing site amenities such as river, woodlands, and prairie, as campus-wide way finding icons, which drove all aspects of the design. Clear, straightforward planning also allows departments to be expanded with minimal construction costs. Judges cited the "clarity of design and elegant manner in which the building integrated into the natural habitat of its upland savanna site." :: View The M.I.N.D.
