Blood Center of Wisconsin, Blood Research Institute Expansion

Expanding on Tradition of Scientific Discovery

The Blood Research Institute is a state-of-the-art research facility located on the campus of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. Blood Research Institute scientists continue a tradition of scientific discovery that began with the inception of the Blood Center of Wisconsin in 1947. HGA completed an expansion and remodeling project at the Blood Research Institute, the first phase of which included a lab and office expansion of approximately 35,000 SF. Future phases could include laboratory expansion and an animal vivarium.

The main design challenge was to create a flexible laboratory space that was more efficient than the model being used in the existing building. The design solution consists of a two story laboratory block with open lab and core facilities on one floor and shell space on the other floor. An office block was developed to create an interactive space for researchers. This design concept built on the strengths of the existing office space and also served as the new main entry point to the facility. The office block also contains the conference/education center.
